Our workshops are our chance to get away and make images with other members and really immerse ourselves in all things photography. Imagine one of those photography holidays you see advertised, and then imagine one where you know all of the other participants. Here are ones we've organised so far.
In September 2023 we travelled up to Northumberland to explore the coast and castles between Lindisfarne and Blyth. There were so many oplaces to visit that we will need to arrange a second trip to cover locations in the south of the county. This time around we visited Amble, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Alnwick.
In July 2023 we set off to explore photographic locations in The Cotswolds. Our workshop covered many different types of locations, including: the prehistoric sites of Avebury and Silbury Hill, the pretty villages of Bibury, Burford and Lower Slaughter, as well as Laycock Abbey and Hidcote Manor.
In April 2023 we stayed south of Ipswich to visit sites on the coast of Suffolk and Essex. There were plenty of good photographic locations to choose from, including: Pin Mill, Aldburgh, the Orwell Bridge, Landguard Point and Shingle Street.
October 2022 saw 10 of the members travel to the North Yorkshire coast for 3 days of photography. Based in Scarborough, we travelled to Staithes, Whitby, Saltwick Bay, Robin Hood's Bay and South Gare, near Redcar. These locations offered a wide range of photographic subject matter, which kept everyone fully occupied and resulted in all of the members coming home with some great images.
We spent three days in Bristol in 2022 , staying at a Premier Inn in the heart of the city. We visited a range of locations in the dockland area, as well as travelling to Clifton to view the suspension bridge and Georgian Houses and visiting Bristol Cathedral.
This 3 day street and architecture workshop, organised by Clare Acford and Neil Phillips saw 12 members explore some of the photographic opportunities of Liverpool. We stayed at a convenient Premier Inn and visited the waterfront area as well as many of the iconic locations on offer; we even had a trip to New Brighton. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the chance to relax into their photography and make images. Clare and Neil were on hand throughout to give instruction, ideas and support and to make sure nobody got lost! We also had a game of 'pass the camera' in the evenings to enable everyone to see what everyone else had been photographing.
Another Clare and Neil production, this time we stayed in a large hotel in Beaumaris and were joined by 13 other members. Angelsey has such a lot to offer the photographer, from stunning beaches, to small towns with long names and even a very photogenic quarry. This was an opportunity to teach landscape photography techniques and train the members in the art of early starts. Some got the idea, others just felt the need to stay in bed a little longer. The stand out moment was the sight of the APG contingent lining up to capture an image of the single tree on the shore at Llyn Padarn near Llanberis. At least everyone was successful!
For this workshop we rented two large houses, near a pub (of course), in the North Norfolk village of Thornham. It gave us the chance to get up for dawn shoots which only required us to walk a short distance to a very photogenic location nearby. It was an ideal location for the members to set up and try to make a good composition. Neil was on hand, as always, to provide guidance and suggest a few composition tweeks. As for all of our workshops, we try to limit the amount of time we spend travelling between sites, so maximising the time spent photographing. In the time we were there we also visited: Holkham Park, Blakeney, Wells-next-the-Sea and the cliffs at Hunstanton.
Mark Sherman manages our workshops and he announces details of the forthcoming the workshops and circulate details to those members attending.
