Learning how to use your camera is fundamental to becoming a photographer. Each video, by Nick Rains from Leica Australia, examines a specific aspect of the photographic process, mostly from the point of view of a beginner. They are not not dumbed down, but neither are they too technical.
For each session, we will give you a link to a video by Nick Rains (see below) who will take you through each topic in detail. We will then have a follow-up session on the dates shown to recap the key points and answer members' questions.
This first video in the series tells you everything you need to know about your camera's aperture and how to use it to control exposure, depth of field and image quality.
The second video in the series explains how by controlling your camera's shutter speeds, you can manage how moving objects in your picture can be controlled to give stunning effects.
The third video in this series sees Nick Rains explain the significance of the ISO setting on your camera and demonstrate how to get a perfect exposure every time.
In this fourth one-hour video Nick Rains explains how Depth of Field works, but from a non-mathematical point of view.
In this video Nick Rains presents case studies that illustrate different ways of focussing; contrasting manual and autofocus, and exploring their respective pros and cons.
In this video Nick Rains discusses the wide range of different types lenses available, how lenses affect the 'look' of your image and why efficient lens choice is such an important consideration.
Not rules - guidelines!
Some ways of arranging the various elements that make up an image simply look better than others, so an understanding of these guidelines will help you create more considered images that go beyond simple snapshots. A well composed but otherwise uninteresting photo cannot be 'saved', but an interesting photo, well composed, can be a thing of true beauty.
In this video, Nick Rains rounds off his eight-part photography instruction series with a look at 'what' to take photos of, rather than just 'how'. Nick examines the concept of mental templates, an idea previously articulated by author and photographer Michael Freeman.
